Established in 1976, Black History Month is recognized in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, among other nations. It is intended to celebrate the contributions blacks in the societies in which they live. In our case, it is the role that African-Americans have played – and continue to play – in American history and life.
There are always the obvious famous African-Americans to focus on during this time: Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, and others. I have chosen to focus this year on the contributions of baseball legend Jackie Robinson. I hope you enjoyed the film that we watched in class, and I hope it made you think beyond the “obvious” African-Americans that we usually focus on during celebrations like this.
Use your comments here to express your ideas about the importance of Black History Month. Is it necessary to have a month dedicated to the contributions of black Americans? What about other months like this – Hispanic Heritage Month, Women’s History Month, and other such celebrations? Who are some of the African-Americans that you think best represent the meaning of this month?
I want to hear what you think and feel. If you disagree with what someone writes, you should comment on it but you MUST remain respectful. I will not tolerate any personal attacks, rude, or inappropriate comments. Most importantly – HAVE FUN!!

I think their should be a month dedicated to African Americans. One reason is that they have inspired us to do things that no other Aferican American did in the past. For example Rosa Parks stood up to a Native American for a bus seat
I think that there should alaways be a month dedicated to African Americans.
I think that they should celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and Women’s History Month.
I think Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and Jackie Robinson are good representations of Black History Month.
i completly agree with matt and erin and that we should treat everyone like we are all the same color no matter what even if it isn't if its not black history month
Andrew :)
i like the idea of black history month because it allows people to see how blacks changed things. i like rosa parks the most and i think she is a good representation of black history month because she stood up for what she thought was right and she caused a change.
with what natasha has said i think i like Martin Luther king JR. the best and that he is one of the best men to ever live by the changes he made and what he has done for the future kids and adults.

I think that there should be a month dedicated to Afrian Americans beause they have done so much to gain acseptance with Americans. Martin Luther King Jr., Oprah, and Jackie Robinson are great representations of Black History Month. Each of them have done amazing things. Martin Luther King Jr. died for his belief that all races should live together in harmony. Oprah has done so many good things for less fortunate people just because she wants to help. Jackie Robinson did something no African American had done and didn't fight back when people taunted him.
Whoops! I agree with everyone and I think Matt B meant to type White Amerian? It says Native Amerian but whatever. Sorry for any misspelled words. My "c" key is messed up and I don't have a spell check on this computer :)
P.S. FISHIES ROCK! <><
I think that African Americans should have a month deicated to them, because of every thing they've done. They've tried so hard for equal rights, and all that working payed off. And a correction to the people who brought up Rosa Parks... in the movie that we watched in class, it said that she didn't mean to start any thing she wasn't planing on staying in the seat if they ran out of seats in the other section, she was just tired from standing on her feet all day.!
I think we should honor every culture and heratige, but not just one mouth a year, every day of our lifes!
I completly agree with sarah... they have done so much to gain acceptance with Americans. All three of the people she brought up accomlished great things(and still are)... but there are so many other African Americans that caused change in the way things used to be....

I think Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was, in my opinion, the bravest man on the earth at that time.
Erin is right about treating others equally, there should be a Hispanic heritage month, also a Woman's history month.
Sarah is so right, those people have done so much for their race, and if they could be here today, they would see the imprint on life that they have made.
PSS. FISHIES DO ROCK!! ><>
JO is right as well, in the video we watched we learned that Rosa Parks was so tired that day, she didn't want to stand up again until she had to get off the bus, then she was arrested for not giving up her seat to a white man. It was not that she wanted to start a boycott, or that she had made plans to resist orders from a white, she was just plain out, simply tired.
I think that one of the greatest African American was Ray Charles Robinson. He inspired me to play the piano. After watching the movie Ray, I got really interested in learning about his life and then ended up learning a whole lot more about blacks, saves and segregation.

i think that the black history is the greatest thing so the African Americans can have a month of dedication for all the hard work they have done for the world. i think that Martin Luther King Jr and Rosa parks and Jackie Robinson all inspired and have dedicated there lives so they could have peace in the world and they have stepped up and done somethings many people have not so this is why i think its important.

I agree with everyone else that it's a good idea to have a month dedicated to African Americans. including other months like Hispanic Heritage and Women's History Month. African Americans deserve a month because of what they did. Rosa Parks stood up for her rights and so did many others like Martin Luther King Jr. :)
i completely agree with everything that everyone wrote but they all just mentioned like three of the same people that we learn about every feburary, but i think we should also consider the other people that maybe nobody does a lot of biographies on and really honor a lot because martin luther king jr., rosa parks, jackie robinson, all did great things but what rosa parks did was on accident and im sure there are lots of other people that should be honored. if they were still alive they would feel like they werent important even though they might have done a little thing like rosa parks and made a big difference and they just didnt know it at the time. i think its great that we have a black history month also but since there are so many people to learn about and appreciate what they did that it would take more than just one single month to honor them and appreciate them.
~amber~ :)
p.s. i forget how to do my name
I think we should definatlly have a black history month. It teaches us about a lot of couragous black americans that stood up for their rights. Some african americans such as Martin Luther King jr. tought us that every man has a right to be free. And a lot of african americans took big risks, like their own life to be free. And like I said we should definatlly have a month dedicated to them.
