I hope you all enjoyed the lesson on eminent domain. I think you all learned quite a bit, and hopefully you've already gone home and shared with your families what you've learned about this important issue. I hope that understand that anyone can be affected by this government "tool." Now I want you to sound off – I want to know what you think. Here's a little something to get you started:
"This is America. This is a country with free enterprise. You have all the rights to own your property, your own home, your own business. You have the right to build your American dream."
"The use of eminent domain is a delicate tool, but it is a tool and it helps keep a community clean; it helps keep a community vibrant. It's a good tool and, definitely, I don't think it should be taken away."
These are quotes by two of the people interviewed in the film Unintended Consequences: Eminent Domain. Use them to get your thoughts rolling. Does eminent domain have a role to play in our communities? What should government do to protect private property rights? What can we do as citizens to ensure that these rights are protected? I don't expect you to answer the questions directly (but you may as part of your thought process). These questions are intended to help you think about the issue.
This will be an open forum, which means your comments should post immediately. Do not copy the thoughts of those that post before you, but you can certainly work off of them. That means that you can comment on a comment – you can disagree, agree, or just comment on someone else's thoughts – but give me your ideas.

1. I think Eminent domain may play a dig roll in the economy and shouldn’t be.
2. They should either forget about eminent domain or start putting it better use like a hospital, library, or something more useful.
3. We can make sure they don’t use Eminent Domain for unpleasant decision like taking a restaurant and turning it into a parking lot for a Mercedes Benz dealership.
I think eminent domain should be banded I don’t really care if they want to put a hospital where my house is I will stay there and I will not move it doesn’t really matter about what they use it for I think that private property rights should be instated every where around the country its our right to own our own business have our own house I mean its a right that is instated in the constitution 5th amendment to be precise and it is just as important as any thing else I have a strong feeling about eminent domain I don’t think it should be used for anything I don’t care if it is for public use or not and just compensation may not mean the same thing to us and the government eminent domain is a powerful thing and it should not be tampered with even if they want a school to go where a cemetery or a house is it is just not right for gods sake I think eminent domain is over all a horrible thing to be used in the united states and all over the world at that

I defiently think that Eminent Domain should be banned. If someone wants to build a school on someones property they should do it on their own. I would feel better about it if they at least gave us a fair chance but they just say, hey, we're taking your property so oh well. i hate to think that people have had their lives shattered and screwed up just because some place wants to be bigger and better. that is not right at all.
And one more thing. andrew and jarrett are right. i heard their posts again and agree 100%.

i think that eminent domain should be used for the right reasons like if this one family is forced to give up there property because the goverment wants to build a school i will be happy but in a way i wouldn't be happy to move but if they want to build a resteraunt or something like that i would at least try to stand for my rights and stay were i live
that is why i say that you have to use eminent domain for the right reasons

I think that Eminent Domain should be band, unless it for a good use like a hospital, school or police station. The government takes your land by Eminent domain and the constitution relates to that by saying that is against the 5th amendment.
The park at the end of Pedrick rd. was taken by the Cox family against there will by Eminent Donain.

eminent domain is a bad thing. even if it is to build a hospital or something that is a public and helpful use and they pay the right amount for it, its still going to be taking up space that we dont have. and along with that the people that lived in that house or had a restraunt or anything else is going to have to go somewhere else and thats just taking up space too. if the person who lived in the house on property that the government wanted can find another place to live, the government can find another place to build whatever it is that they are. it would make more sense to just take the property of a house that nobody lived in so that you dont have to pay anybody and you wont have to take anybodys home. eminent domain is helpful sometimes in the end result but i think they should find other ways to use it and make it not hurt anybody.
We think that Eminent Domain can be used, as long as it is used responsibly. For example if the government has taken your house, they would have to put something that the entire town could use. Like a hospital, church, or a school. If the government took your house they couldn't just give it to another private owner. That would be very unfair to you, because they are just taking your home to give to another person that could probably buy their own home.

Eminent domain is really dumb you cant just come in and take someones property and or house.
Tehy only should be able to use eminent domain for police departments, schools, and ohter good uses.

I think that eminent domain is about rediculous.You shouldn't be able to just knock on someones door and say you have to move out by this date and the people can't even disagree.It should only be used if someone is already going to move not force them to.
I strongly think that Eminent Domain is over used and taken to increase the taxes the government receives. I don't think Eminent Domain should be taken out off the constitution but I think they should use it for public uses such as roads, schools, hospitals, police departments, and other necessities. Taking a dinner or a store that has been around for a long time and still has good business, shouldn't be taken and given to a car dealership like what they tried to do in the video, its just wrong!

I think that Eminent Domain is a useful tool of the government. However, it is overused. If the government is going to take private property and give it to another private person to make money then they should at least give them enough money to buy or rebuild what was taken. I think that it should only be used when there is a good public purpose (such as hospitals, fire houses, and schools)and not to make money for people.
People should protest when Eminent Domain is not being used right by the government.

i think that eminent domain is important and does play a role in my community because its a firestation near my house where houses probably used to be. i think that it should not be banded because it is helpful when its used correctly. the goveernment should care more about the people and respect their right to private property so the shouldnt be taking peoples land if its not going to benefit everyone possitively. as citizens we can on a a strike to the government or we could just move to another country and let the government get all the land with no one to pay for it and then theyll become broke and beg us all to come back and they wont be "trippin" by using eminent domain wrong no more.
1. I think eminent domain has a role in our communities because without eminent domain we may not have hospitals or police stations. It is both bad and good for the communities because the government might be taking your home to build something like a road or a hospital and I would be ok with that but if it was being used to build a store or an office building I would be very angry and sad.
2. I think the government should protect private property rights by making sure eminent domain is used properly rather than just building something that brings in more taxes. Like the movie says, we have the right to build our American Dream, that shouldn’t go down the toilet because some government people want to build a Wal-Mart where you have lived you whole life!
3. We as citizens should protect our rights because without them we would be miserable. We should make sure the government knows that we will not stand for eminent domain being used for the wrong reasons! Even if eminent domain never affects you personally, you shouldn’t let even a total stranger’s life change form great to terrible because of eminent domain.

I think eminent domain is very unfair. There are a lot of unused property that need to be put to some use and they should use that instead of forcing people to move out. And if people get kicked out of their home or get there buisiness taken away where are going to go or what will they do, I bet sooner or later hundreds of people are going to start some kind of angry mob because the government or who ever are taking advantage of it.
